PREFACE.

I

N 1878 I wrote for the IndexSociety, as its first publication,a pamphlet entitled "What isan Index?" The present little book iscompiled on somewhat similar lines; but,as its title suggests, it is drawn up witha more practical object. The first fourchapters are "Historical," and the otherfour are "Practical"; but the historicalportion is intended to lead up to thepractical portion by showing what toimitate and what to avoid.

There has been of late years a considerablechange in public opinion with respectto the difficulties attending the making ofboth indexes and catalogues. It was once[pg viii]a common opinion that anyone withoutpreparatory knowledge or experience couldmake an index. That that opinion is nottrue is amply proved, I hope, in the chapteron the "Bad Indexer."

I have attempted to describe the bestway of setting to work on an index. Todo this with any hope of success it is necessaryto give details that may to some seempuerile, but I have ventured on particularsfor which I hope I may not be condemned.
