PREFACE.

For much of the valuable information whichthe following History of Portuguese Literaturecontains, the author acknowledges himself tobe indebted to the communications of a learnedPortuguese, with whom he became acquaintedafter the materials he had previously collectedwere arranged for publication. M. Bouterwekoriginally intended to comprise what he hadto say, on Portuguese literature, in a briefsketch, which was to form a supplement to thepreceding volume; but the assistance of hisliterary friend enabled him to make the presentvolume a suitable companion to his historyof the sister literature of the Peninsula. In England commercial interests may haveinduced many persons to make themselvesacquainted with the language of Portugal, but the literature of that country has hithertovibeen studied by few. With the exception ofCamoens, even the names of the principalPortuguese authors are scarcely known to us.The greater novelty of the subject is thereforean advantage which this second volume possessesover the first.vii
