Blood transfusion is of rapidly growing importance inmodern therapeutics, yet the subject has only been representedin the medical literature of this country hithertoby isolated communications concerning special points. The present work seeks to give a connected account of thewhole subject and of the problems arising from it, togetherwith practical instructions for performing transfusionsby an efficient and simple method.
I am indebted for helpful criticisms and suggestions toProfessor A. V. Hill, F.R.S., of Manchester University.Dr. J. H. Drysdale has kindly allowed me to use therecords of three cases of pernicious anæmia treated in hiswards at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Dr. Joekes has permittedme to refer to some of his own observations concerningabnormal serum reactions. Dr. R. M. Janes hasgiven me some account of the important work recentlydone by Dr. Bruce Robertson and himself at the Hospitalfor Sick Children, Toronto.
The Bibliography at the end of the book makes no pretenceof being absolutely complete. It is, however, moreextensive than any that has yet been printed, and I believethat it contains references to nearly all the contributions ofpresent importance published up to the date of going topress. Numbers referring to the Bibliography have beeninserted in the text only where no name is given to theauthority quoted.
