SOUTH KENSINGTON MUSEUM ART HANDBOOKS.

Edited by WILLIAM MASKELL.

No. 2.—IVORIES ANCIENT AND MEDIÆVAL.

[Pg ii]

These Handbooks are reprints of thedissertations prefixed to the large catalogues of the chief divisionsof works of art in the Museum at South Kensington; arranged andso far abridged as to bring each into a portable shape. The Lordsof the Committee of Council on Education having determined on thepublication of them, the editor trusts that they will meet the purposeintended; namely, to be useful, not alone for the collections at SouthKensington, but for other collectors by enabling the public at atrifling cost to understand something of the history and character ofthe subjects treated of.

The authorities referred to in each book are given in the largecatalogues; where will also be found detailed descriptions of the verynumerous examples in the South Kensington Museum.
