In the wilds, moving or standing, I was theobserved of all observers. Although theanimals did not know I was coming, generallythey were watching for me and observed mewithout showing themselves.
As I sat on a log watching two black bearsplaying in a woods opening, a faint crack of astick caused me to look behind. A flock ofmountain sheep were watching me only a fewsteps distant. A little farther away a wildcatsat on a log, also watching me. There probablywere other watchers that I did not see.
Animals use instinct and reason and alsohave curiosity—the desire to know. Many ofthe more wide-awake species do not run panic-strickenfrom the sight or the scent of man. When it is safe they linger to watch him. Theyalso go forth seeking him. Their keen, automatic, constant senses detect him afar, andstealthily, sometimes for hours, they stalk, followand watch him.
In the wilderness the enthusiastic, painstakingand skillful observer will see many wildfolks following their daily routine. But, howeverfortunate he may be, numerous animals willwatch him whose presence he never suspects.
