The object of this volume is to lay open to the publicthe most extensive and extraordinary system of crimewhich the world ever witnessed. It is a system whichhas been in full operation for more than three hundredyears, and continues yet in unabating activity of evil. The apathy which has hitherto existed in England uponthis subject has proceeded in a great measure from wantof knowledge. National injustice towards particulartribes, or particular individuals, has excited the mostlively feeling, and the most energetic exertions for itsredress,—but the whole wide field of unchristian operationsin which this country, more than any other, isengaged, has never yet been laid in a clear and comprehensiveview before the public mind. It is no part ofthe present volume to suggest particular plans of remedy. The first business is to make known the nature and theextent of the evil,—that once perceived, in this greatcountry there will not want either heads to plan or handsto accomplish all that is due to the rights of others, orthe honour and interest of England.
