There is no attempt made in the littlesketches which this book contains to dealhistorically with events of the war. It is buta small Souvenir de la guerre—a series ofvignettes of things as they struck me at thetime, and later. I have written of types, notof individuals, and less of action than ofrest. The horror of war at its worst is fitsubject for a master hand alone.
I have to thank the proprietors of TheGlobe for their courtesy in allowing the reproductionof “Canvas and Mud” and“Tent Music,” and of the Canadian Magazinefor the reproduction of “Martha of Dranvoorde.”
Finally, I feel that I can have no greaterhonour than humbly to dedicate this book[6]to the officers, N.C.O.’s and men of the FirstCanadian Infantry Battalion, Ontario Regiment, with whom I have spent some of thehappiest, as well as some of the hardest, daysof my life.
