The chief merit the Translator claims for thislittle effort is “faithfulness of translation.” He hasendeavoured to translate every word and everythought of the Russian writer, and to avoid additions.
Most of the poems selected for translation arepopular, not only amongst the higher classes ofRussian society, but also with the Russian soldieryand peasantry, who are very fond of poetry, andamongst whom education has spread, and continuesto spread, with marvellous rapidity.
The Translator trusts that this little volume maynot only prove interesting to ordinary Englishreaders wishing to get a general idea of Russianpoetry, but may also be found of some serviceto Englishmen studying Russian, and Russiansstudying English.
