Bob and Betty, Paul and Peggyand little Dot are five little friends.They go to the same school. Manyother children go to the school too,but these five little friends are theones this story is about.
Bob is the tall boy in the brownsuit. Betty is the girl in thechecked dress. Paul is the boywith the white blouse. Peggy isthe girl with curls. Little Dot isthe tiny child with bobbed hair.
Bob and Betty, Paul and Peggy[2]and little Dot have a very fineteacher. She is called Miss West.Many other children are in MissWest's room too. But the five littlefriends are the ones this story isabout.
One morning when the childrencame to school Miss West had asurprise for them. On her deskwas something large and round. Itwas all covered with paper.
"Guess what this is, children,"said Miss West.
"It is a balloon," said Bob.
"I think it is a football," saidPaul.
"No, no, you are both wrong,"[3]said Miss West. She took thepaper off. What do you think itwas?
It was a big glass bowl. In itwere six goldfish. They wereswimming about in the water.
"Little folks," said Miss West,"these are our school pets. Wemust feed them and give themfresh water. Then they will live along time and we can have funwatching them."
