PREFACE.

The object of this book is to portray thecharacter of the MANLY BOY—a characterthat never fails to inspire love and esteem,if only it be natural and genuine. That ayouth may still be a real boy in his tastes, his pursuits, and his feelings,—as everyyoung lad certainly ought to be,—and yetexhibit something of true manliness in hisspirit and deportment, will, it is hoped, bemade manifest to the youngest mind, in thestory of Whistler.
